Daf is the Kurdish large-sized frame drum from Iran played mainly in religious occasions and more recently in classical Persian music.

The large sized frame drum Daf is not only played in Iran, but also in some other oriental countries like Iraq. Depending on the region where the instrument is played, it is called by one of many different but similar names like Deff, Daff, Duff and Defi.

In pre-Islamic Iran the instrument was called Dap or Dep; after the spread of Islam the name changed to Daf.
